History and Geography

History is a subject offered to students at both junior and senior cycles in Fingal Community College.  It is compulsory for all first to third year pupils whereas it is optional for those taking the Leaving Certificate examinations.  The courses at both cycles are very wide-ranging.  Pupils who study history during their five years will learn about topics as diverse as the coming of the first stone age settlers to Ireland and the Moon Landing.

The students are encouraged to study historical events in an in-depth manner.  They develop analytical and literacy skills which will prove beneficial to them in any future career which they opt for.  Students are encouraged to work independently as well as in groups by working on projects.  This allows pupils to engage in an in-depth study of a topic that is of particular interest to them.  The study of primary and secondary sources of history develops in pupils the ability to detect bias and not to accept anything at face value.

The history department has organised trips to historical sites both at home and abroad as well as re-enactments of a variety of historical events within the school grounds.  The courses of both Junior and Leaving Certificate aim to provide students with an in-depth education and an appreciation of the historical method and an understanding of the past.
